The Opportunity

American Express is committed to nurturing small business ownership. In the wake of the U.S. mortgage crisis, they focused on a declining Detroit, where some passionate and loyal entrepreneurs re-dedicated themselves to rehabilitating their community and boosting local economic growth. The Wondros team channeled their voices into a series of short films to support American Express’ Small Business Saturday campaign.

The Approach

We developed a creative approach that would truly capture the essence of this community and its spirit of positivity and endurance. Our team engaged small business owners to participate by inviting us into their workspaces and sharing their stories on camera. Over the course of a week we conducted on-camera interviews and captured illustrative b-roll footage of the city’s striking variances: shuttered homes and dreams, but also glimmers of hope and visions of a burgeoning main street. We filmed, edited, and delivered several pieces all while on location in Detroit.

These films tell an inspiring, alternative story of the city, giving voice to those who are determined to see their home thrive despite the dominant narrative of decline; and they shed new light for consumers on what a financial institution can be, and why American Express considers small business development to be so crucial for a healthy economy and community.
